Seawolves outlast Brown to win home opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team was able to close out its home opener to claim a 77-64 victory over Brown at Island Federal Credit Union Arena Wednesday evening. Senior UC Iroegbu led five Seawolves in double figures as Stony Brook moved to 1-4 on the year and the Bears sit at 2-2.

Boals' Reaction
"Coming into today, the biggest goal for us was to compete for 40 minutes and I thought we did that," said head coach Jeff Boals. "I thought our bench was phenomenal, they came in and gave us great energy, they gave us a spark. That's one of the strengths of our team is our depth. When you come off the bench you have the mindset to bring great energy and positively contribute to the game, and I thought multiple people did that."

Highlights
  • Stony Brook started strong offensively, but the Bears were able to answer quickly and kept things close for much of the half.
  • The Seawolves extended the lead to nine with under four minutes until the break following a three from senior Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.).
  • The two teams kept the difference within two possessions for much of the second half until Stony Brook was able to pull away, using a 10-0 run to go up by nine again.
  • The Seawolves closed out the game on a 13-3 run, including six straight free throws from Michael Almonacy (Brentwood, N.Y.).

Notes
  • Iroegbu and redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) both reached double figures in the first half. This was the third straight double-figure scoring game for both players.
  • This is the third straight game the Seawolves have had at least four players score in double figures.
  • Stony Brook's bench outscored Brown's 38-19 in the game.
