STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook volleyball team kicked off a weekend of home play with a 3-0 victory over UMass Lowell on Friday night at Pritchard Gymnasium. This is the second time this season the Seawolves have swept the River Hawks. Stony Brook moves to 16-9 on the season, 6-3 in the America East after the win, while UMass Lowell is now 5-18 on the year, 0-10 in league play.
Belzung's Reaction
"I'm really proud of our effort tonight," said head coach
Kristin Belzung. " We came in here with the emphasis on siding out really well. We did that from the start and carried it through the match. I think that allowed us to get into a pretty good offensive rhythm and put up some good offensive numbers."
Set-By-Set
- Stony Brook jumped out to a commanding lead in the opening set, using a 6-0 run to distance itself early on. The Seawolves used a steady push on the offensive end to keep cruising, and eventually forced UMass Lowell to use its second timeout as it trailed 20-9. The River Hawks quickly rallied for three straight points of the break in play and were able to get the difference back within single digits, but Stony Brook held on for the 25-17 victory.
- Play was much closer in the second set as the two teams saw 10 ties but few lead changes. The Seawolves held the advantage for much of the set, but UMass Lowell would not back down. The River Hawks took their only late-set lead at 23-22 after an ace and Stony Brook called a timeout. Senior
Cydney Bowman (Lake Mary, Fla.) and sophomore
Jordan Gels (Lewis Center, Ohio) got up for a block to even things back up and after a UMass Lowell attacking error, sophomore
Maria Poole (Stavanger, Norway) threw down a kill to give the Seawolves the 25-23 win.
- Stony Brook never let the River Hawks back into it, dominating Set 3 from the start. The Seawolves tallied a 10-2 run to begin the set and quickly got the difference to double digits midway through. Back-to-back kills from junior
McKyla Brooks (Blasdell, N.Y.) and sophomore
LeAnne Sakowicz (Wauconda, Ill.) sealed the sweep with a 25-11 win in the third set.
