STATESBORO, GA – Stony Brook women's basketball won its third-straight contest on Thursday afternoon on the road at Hanner Fieldhouse, topping Georgia Southern, 68-49, in non-conference play.
 
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 8-4 overall in 2017-18.

"I thought our group came out really strong to start the game. We were able to rebound and run, and convert our defense into offense. I'm proud of how we stayed focused on the little things throughout the course of the game."

Highlights

• Stony Brook shot 42.3 percent (22-for-52) from the floor in the road win, knocking down eight 3-pointers. The Seawolves made a season-high 16 free throws, as well.
• The Seawolves' defense recorded nine steals, forcing Georgia Southern to turn the ball over 17 times. Stony Brook out-rebounded the Eagles 36-26.
• Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) scored a game-high 20 points, just one point shy of her career-best. Matthews added seven rebounds and three assists in the winning effort, going 8-of-13 (4-of-7 from 3-point range).
• Shania Johnson (Frederick, MD.) added 18 points, three rebounds and three assists of her own, sinking four 3-pointers in 25 minutes of action.
• Cheyenne Clark (Deptford, N.J) chipped in with nine points and six rebounds of her own, while India Pagan (New London, Conn.) recorded six points and five rebounds.

Notes

• The Seawolves opened up action on a 7-0 run. Pagan scored the game's first bucket in the paint, then Johnson knocked down a pair of free throw's before sinking her first three of the game to give Stony Brook the early edge.
• Johnson knocked down another deep 3-point field goal with just four seconds left in the second quarter, sending the Seawolves into the break with an 11-point lead (31-20). Matthews led the way offensively in the first half, pouring in 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
• Stony Brook shot 11-of-26 in the second half of action, including a 6-for-12 performance in the fourth quarter to help seal the non-conference victory.
