PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior
Jakub Petras hit a jumper with .3 seconds left in overtime to lift the Stony Brook men's basketball team past Rutgers, 75-73 at The RAC Friday night. Junior
Jaron Cornish forced overtime with a steal and an immediate three-pointer with three seconds on the clock in regulation. The Seawolves move to 5-8 on the year with the win, while Rutgers moves to 10-4.
Boals' Reaction
"Hats off to our guys, what a great game. We kept chipping away and chipping away," said head coach
Jeff Boals after the game. "They stretched the lead on us a couple times, but we always talk about 'bend, don't break' and I thought we did a great job of being resilient, having great grit and perseverance. We made some game-winning plays down the stretch, but most importantly we battled on the boards and that was our biggest key going in."
Highlights
- It was a slow first half for both teams on the offensive end. Rutgers took an eight-point lead midway through the opening period, but the Seawolves put together a 7-0 run to close out the half and get back within a point.
- Junior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) hit a floater at the buzzer to cap off the late scoring spree as Stony Brook held the Scarlet Knights scoreless in the final 2:45 of the half.
- Close play themed the second half and the Seawolves finally regained the lead after three ties in the early going.
- Rutgers seemed to have an answer for everything Stony Brook did down the stretch and was able to go up five with 15 seconds left in regulation.
- Senior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) drove the lane and dunked it on a feed from senior Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.) to make it a three-point game with seven seconds to play.
- Stony Brook pressed after the make and Cornish came up with the steal, immediately draining a three from the bench-side corner to tie it up and force overtime.
- Rutgers scored first in extra time, but redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England), who was playing with four fouls, gave the Seawolves a spark as he hit a go-ahead three with 1:52 on the clock.
- Yeboah made back-to-back layups to give Stony Brook the lead late, but Rutgers answered and tied it at 73-all with 23 seconds left.
- Stony Brook slowed play on the final possession and it was senior Jakub Petras (Rajec, Slovakia) with a mid-range jumper at the buzzer to seal the overtime road win.
Notes
- This is the sixth straight game Cornish has scored in double figures and the first double-double of his career.
- Yeboah has scored 20-plus points in three of the last four games, finishing with a game-high 21.
- Stony Brook took the rebounding edge in the game and out-scored the Scarlet Knights 38-28 in the paint.

- This was the first overtime game for the Seawolves since Nov. 19, 2015, at Vanderbilt. It was the first overtime win since Stony Brook defeated Detroit on the road, 104-102 on Nov. 24, 2013.
- This is the Seawolves' first win over a Power 5 opponent since topping then-No. 13 Washington on the road on Dec. 28, 2015.
