BALTIMORE, Md. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team came up short at UMBC, falling 65-52 at RAC Arena Wednesday night. The Seawolves now sit at 17-11 on the season, 12-3 in conference play. UMBC is now 18-10 on the year and 9-6 in the league.
Boals' Reaction
"The biggest factor tonight was the start of the game. We couldn't afford to have the start that we did, we went down 9-0 early, and that really set the tone," said head coach
Jeff Boals. "We made a run, we cut it to three in the second half and guys were out there competing. Credit to our guys, they battled, but we missed some shots we normally make and we couldn't get over the hump."
Highlights
- UMBC got things going right away, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first four minutes of play.
- Junior Roland Nyama (Frankfurt, Germany) finally got the Seawolves on the board and scored the team's first seven points. He hit double figures with just inside nine minutes remaining in the first half when he drained his second three of the night.
- The Retrievers used a 10-2 run to up the difference to double figures and continued a steady push to take a 15-point lead into the break.
- After both teams had a slow start to the second half, UMBC head coach Ryan Odom was issued two technical fouls and as a result, ejected from the game.
- Nyama went to the line and made all four free throws to make it a five-point game and junior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) scored a layup less than a minute later to get the Seawolves back within a possession at 47-44.
- Stony Brook hung around, but the Retrievers strung together a 9-0 run to go back up double figures with 4:04 left to play and never looked back.
Notes
- Nyama notched his second 20-plus point game of the season as he led the way with 22 points.
- Stony Brook limited itself to single-digit turnovers for the 12th time this season, finishing the game with just eight.
- The Seawolves remain in second place in the America East and will host a quarterfinal game in Wednesday, March 1.
