PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 14 Stony Brook men's lacrosse team fell for the first time this season, 17-4, to No. 7 Rutgers at High Point Solutions Stadium Friday night. Unlike in previous outings, the Seawolves were never able to get anything going in the game, as they now sit at 4-1 on the season and the Scarlet Knights move to 6-0.
Nagle's Reaction
"It was a disappointing night for us," said head coach
Jim Nagle. "I believe in our leadership and our team. We will learn from tonight and push forward."
Highlights
- Rutgers came out hot on the attack, putting away six goals in the opening quarter, also winning all seven face-offs.
- Freshman Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.) tried to get things going early in the second quarter for the Seawolves as he buried a pass from classmate Tom Haun (Sachem, N.Y.) nearly three minutes into the new period.
- Three minutes later Rutgers struck again, starting a five-goal spree that extended the difference. Senior Ryan Bitzer (Riverhead, N.Y.) put an end to the streak as he fired a shot into the back of the cage with 1:17 remaining until the half.
- Stony Brook trailed 11-2 at the break and was still being dominated on the face-off winning just three of 12 in the first half.
- Junior goalie Brandon Maciejewski (Pen Yan, N.Y.) started the third quarter with a big save for the Seawolves, but it didn't take long for Rutgers to continue its push.
- It was another high-scoring quarter for the Scarlet Knights as they tacked on five more goals in the third and again held Stony Brook scoreless.
- After an early goal by Rutgers to the start the fourth quarter, senior Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) ended the drought for the Seawolves, putting away a pass from White with 5:08 remaining in the game.
- Bitzer made it two goals on the day with some help from junior Kyle Abdellatif (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) as the clock ran under a minute-and-a-half to play.
Notes
- Stony Brook improved in the second half, outshooting Rutgers 13-10, and cleaned up play in transition, completing all seven clear attempts in the half.
