ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Stony Brook softball team dropped a pair of games at the Lobo Classic, falling to Santa Clara in the first game of the day before a late, two-inning rally put the game against New Mexico in the Lobos favor. The Seawolves will look to wrap up play out West on a high note, but currently sit at 1-10 on the year.
Game 1: Santa Clara 6, Stony Brook 4
- Freshman Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) and junior Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) reached early for the Seawolves and a sacrifice fly to center field put them on the board. An illegal pitch brought Evans home and gave Stony Brook a 2-0 lead to start.
- Santa Clara matched the early lead to tie the game in the first. Senior Alex Petrolia (Henderson, Nev.) replaced junior Maddy Neales (Orange, Calif.) in the circle in the second inning as the Broncos added another run to take the lead.
- After allowing three runs to score in the third, freshman Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) came in to pitch and struck out the only batter she faced.
- Senior Sami Duffy (Carmel, N.Y.) singled to get on in the fifth and Evans sent a double to right-center to bring in the run.
- Rahrich threw three scoreless innings before the Seawolves tried to get something going in the seventh. They quickly loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly brought in another run for Stony Brook, but a double play ended the inning and the game.
Game 2: New Mexico 13, Stony Brook 12
- The Seawolves got out to a hot start, putting up eight runs in the first inning. Freshman Riley Craig (Thornton, Colo.) singled to bring in the first run and a grand slam from Rahrich kept things going. Stony Brook tacked on two more runs before the inning's end.
- After two scoreless innings for New Mexico, the Seawolves used a pair of singles to get runners on and added three more runs in the third.
- The Lobos got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring five runs.
- Stony Brook added another run in the top of the fifth, but New Mexico carried over the momentum into the inning and rallied for eight runs to take its first lead of the game.
