Hering Homers Twice, Seawolves Split Pair of Games in Stony Brook Invitational

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook softball split a pair of games on Saturday, March 25 in the first day of the Stony Brook Invitational, falling to Brown, 6-0, then topping Holy Cross, 9-0, to finish off the day.
 
Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) led the way offensively for the Seawolves, hitting a pair of home runs in the team's win over Holy Cross. Hering went 2-for-6 on the day in total with three runs scored and five RBI's.
 
Lindsey Hughes (San Dimas, Calif.) threw the first complete-game shutout of her career in the win. She went 5.0 innings in the final game of the day to help Stony Brook win its second contest of the season, just after she recorded two outs at the end of the first game.

Game 1: Brown 6, Stony Brook 0
 
Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) and Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) each recorded a hit in the loss for the Seawolves, as both went 1-for-2 at the plate.
 
Rahrich also got the start in the circle for Stony Brook, pitching the first 5.1 innings. She gave up five hits and six runs, while striking out seven Brown batters.
 
Hughes tossed the last 0.2 innings, striking out one batter in relief.
 
Game 2: Stony Brook 9, Holy Cross 0
 
Hughes started Game 2 for the Seawolves, tossing a complete-game shutout. She threw all five innings of the game, giving up five hits and no runs while striking out three batters.

Stony Brook registered nine runs on 11 hits in Game 2, taking the game in just five innings. The Seawolves scored twice in the first and second innings, three times in the third and twice in the fifth inning of play.
 
Hering blasted her first home run, a two-run shot, in the top of the second inning to make it 4-0 Seawolves. She then homered again in the third inning, plating three runs to extend Stony Brook's lead to seven runs.

Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.), Rahrich and Rivera all chipped in with a hit and an RBI of their own.

On Deck
Stony Brook is back in action tomorrow (Sunday, March 26), squaring off with Brown at 10:30 a.m. and Holy Cross at 12:30 p.m. in the second day of the tournament from University Field.
