Seawolves drop two at Purple/Gold Challenge

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team was unable to pick up victory on the second day of play at the Purple/ Gold Challenge on Saturday. The Seawolves fell in five innings in their first game of the day against Eastern Illinois, before dropping a game against the host team, Lipscomb later in the day. Stony Brook now sits at 1-7 on the season.

Game 1: Eastern Illinois 10, Stony Brook 1
  • Eastern Illinois used a three-run homer in the first inning to get on the board first.
  • The bottom of the second started with two quick outs, but starter junior Maddy Neales (Orange, Calif.) walked the next two batters and was replaced by senior Alex Petrolia (Henderson, Nev.). The very next batter was able to knock in two run and Eastern Illinois added two more before the inning's end.
  • The Seawolves allowed three more run in the third before another pitching change. Sophomore Lindsey Hughes (San Dimas, Calif.) entered the game and struck out the first batter she faced to end the inning.
  • The Seawolves put two runners on in the fourth inning, but were unable to bring them home.
  • Freshman Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) homered to left to start the fifth inning to get Stony Brook on the board and freshman Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) hit a one-out double try and keep things going, but a strike out and a pop fly quickly ended the inning.
  • All three pitchers for the Seawolves struck out two batters in their appearances.
Game 2: Lipscomb 7, Stony Brook 1
  • Lipscomb got on the board early, sending a two-out homer over the fence in the first inning.
  • After a quick second and third inning, senior Lexie Shue (Lakewood, Calif.) evened the score as she hit a home run over the wall in left-center field.
  • Lipscomb used a pair of singles to get runners on in the fifth inning and a sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position. Another single brought in the go-ahead run for the Lady Bisons and Hughes came in to pitch for the Seawolves. Stony Brook gave up two more runs before closing out the inning.
  • Lipscomb added another three runs in the sixth inning to seal the victory.
