Rivera's HR not enough, Seawolves fall at Hofstra

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook softball fell against Hofstra by the final score of 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium. The Seawolves came back to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning, but the Pride scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the win.

Sophomore catcher Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2. She blasted a 3-2 pitch deep over the center field fence for her fifth homer of the season. Rivera now has a team-leading 24 RBI's in 2017.

Quoting Head Coach Megan T. Bryant
"We came out with good focus, taking the early lead and several of our players had excellent approaches at the plate against a good pitcher. We were able to tie it up in the top of the sixth but opened the door for Hofstra by not finishing the inning off on a ground ball and walks."

Notes
  • Freshman Allyssa Malony (Runnemede, N.J.) stayed hot at the plate, driving in Stony Brook's first run of the game with a single in the top of the fourth inning. Maloney had three hits and an RBI in Tuesday's win over Iona, as well.
  • Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) went 2-for-3 at the plate in total. She's hit safely in nine of the last 11 games.
  • Freshman outfielder Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) also had a two-hit day of her own, raising her batting average to .346 this season.
  • Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) started the game in the circle, going 3.0 innings while giving up just three hits and two runs. Maddy Neales (Orange, Calif.) went the next 2.2 innings, giving up four runs on four hits. Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) also recorded an out, retiring the only hitter she faced.
