Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Espinoza's first career goal leads Stony Brook past Seton Hall on Friday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook men's soccer topped Seton Hall, 1-0, to earn its second win of the 2017 season on Friday night at LaValle Stadium.

Danny Espinoza (East Meadow, N.Y.) tallied his first career goal in the win for the Seawolves (2-1-0, 0-0-0 AEC), finding the back of the net at 57:20 to break the tie.

Quoting Head Coach Ryan Anatol
"[The goal] is awesome for Danny. He's been a big part of our success defensively... and to come up with his first goal, I was very happy for him. We challenged the guys to come out and really respond, and come out with intensity and to compete – and I thought we did that. I thought our energy was really good, I thought our intensity was good at the start of the game. Overall, I thought it was a good performance. I'm very happy with the way we responded, and it was a good result for us tonight."

Final: Stony Brook 1, Seton Hall 0
  • Espinoza's goal came with 32:45 left in the contest. He intercepted a ball in the middle of the field, then ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the net from 25 yards out to make it 1-0. The goal is the first in Espinoza's 57-game collegiate career.
  • Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) made five more saves in net, earning his second shutout win so far this year. Seton Hall had a good scoring chance with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, but McMahon was perfectly positioned to corral Corey Burkhardt's shot on net and keep the game scoreless.
  • Espinoza, Thibault Duval (Liege, Belgium) and Eric McKenna (Great River, N.Y.) all tallied a pair of shots in the victory.
  • Stony Brook outshot the Pirates 11-7 in total (7-1 in the second half), and attempted six corner kicks to Seton Hall's two.
