TAMPA - Stony Brook's football team set the tone early on Saturday after against USF at Raymond James Stadium, but fell 31-17 to the 19^th-ranked team in the FBS.
 
Senior RB Stacey Bedell (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) gained 75 yards on 10 carries, including a 54-yard touchdown run, to led the offense, while junior LB Shayne Lawless (Moorestown, N.J.) recorded a career-high 13 tackles to lead the defense and sophomore Andrew Trent (Bellport, N.Y.) and redshirt-freshman DB Augie Contressa (Commack, N.Y.) blocked and recovered a punt, respectively, for a touchdown to led the special teams.
 
Scoring

• Stony Brook's defense set the tone early and the special teams followed with a blocked punt for a touchdown with 6:57 left in the first quarter. Andrew Trent blocked the USF punt into the end zone where Augie Contressa fell on the ball. The PAT was good by Alex Lucansky.
• USF came right back on the ensuing drive and tied it up with a one-yard run by Darius Tice. Emili Nadelman kicked the PAT. The Drive was nine plays for 73 yards.
• The Seawolves retook the lead with 4:02 left in the second quarter when Alex Lucansky nailed a 36-yard field goal. The drive was 11 plays for 39 yards.
• USF took the lead with 2:43 left in the third quarter when Quinton Flowers found Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the end zone from six yards out. Emili Nadelman kicked the PAT. The drive was 18 plays for 80 yards.
• Emili Nadelman extended USF's lead to 17-10 with a 33-yard field goal with 0:32 left in the third quarter. The drive was four plays for zero yards.
• Stacey Bedell tied it back up with a 54-yard run with 13:04 left in the fourth quarter. Alex Lucansky's PAT was good. The drive was six plays for 75 yards.
• USF quickly struck right back with a 65-yard pass from Quinton Flowers to Tyre McCants with 11:23 left in the fourth quarter. Emili Nadelman's PAT was good. The drive was four plays for 82 yards.
• The Bulls tacked on another score with 14-yard run by Darius Tice with 1:40 left in the fourth quarter. Emili Nadelman made the PAT. The drive was four plays for 25 yards.

• Stony Brook gained 229 yards of total offense on 70 plays. USF had 339 yards of total offense on 81 plays.
• The Seawolves had the ball for 32:21 minutes of the game.
• QB Joe Carbone was 17-34 passing for 137 yards.
• TE Cal Daniels had four receptions 35 yards, while Harrison Jackson had three catches for 34 yards.
• P Narc Nolan averaged 41.7 yards on nine punts, including a 55-yarder.
• LB Shayne Lawless recorded a career-high 13 tackles, while LB Noah McGinty added 10 total stops.
• Stony Brook recorded two sacks (Lawless and Jordan Scarbrough).

"You can view this a few different ways. When you go into there type of games I want them to have to coach in the fourth quarter and in the fourth quarter I looked up and it was 17-17 and they we coaching. They had to make some decision and that is something we certainly played for, but we played for a win also. We didn't get the win so I think at the end of the day we didn't success in our total goal."

• RB Stacey Bedell scored on a 54-yard run in the third quarter for his 24^th career rushing touchdown to move one score away from tying Brock Jackolski for second on the Seawolves' career rushing touchdowns list.

• Stony Brook blocked a USF punt in the first quarter and recovered in the end zone for touchdown (blocked by Andrew Trent and recovered by Augie Contressa). The last time the Seawolves blocked a punt for a touchdown was last season against William & Mary on Nov. 5.

• DB Travon Reid-Segure recorded his fourth career interception on the first drive of the third quarter.
