Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Stony Brook goes 1-1, sweeps Sacred Heart to finish Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Stony Brook volleyball team finished the Harvard Invitational going 1-1 on Saturday. After falling to American 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 9-25, 19-25) in the morning, the Seawolves bounced back to close out the weekend with a sweep of Sacred Heart (25-18, 25-19, 25-17) to move to 3-4 on the year.

Belzung's Reaction
"The team did a great job of bouncing back today. We went from a morning where didn't play clean, to executing the game plan against Sacred Heart this evening," said head coach Kristin Belzung. "We have a short turnaround for our first home match Tuesday night against Hofstra. We are looking forward to a great crowd in Pritchard as we fight to defend the Island."

Match 1: American 3, Stony Brook 1
  • Close play started the match against American. After trailing early on, a kill from junior McKyla Brooks (Blasdell, N.Y.) and a block from sophomore Maria Poole (Stavanger, Norway) and senior Cydney Bowman (Lake Mary, Fla.) tied the first set at 20.
  • The Seawolves battled but were unable to take the lead until a kill from Brooks made it 24-all and an attacking error for American put the score in Stony Brook's favor.
  • It was Brooks again on the attack that sealed the comeback victory in the opening set for the Seawolves.
  • American jumped out to lopsided leads in each of the next three sets. The Seawolves didn't give up in the second set, rallying for four straight points with the set on the line but American eventually took the win.
Match 2: Stony Brook 3, Sacred Heart 0
  • After trailing early in the first set, the Seawolves broke a six-all tie and remained in control for the rest of the set.
  • Stony Brook led nearly the entire second set, despite numerous ties. After a slight, 12-11 edge for Sacred Heart midway through the set, the Seawolves quickly regained the lead and steadily pulled away to go up 2-0.
  • It was another close one to start in the third set, but five straight points for Stony Brook extended the lead and forced a Sacred Heart timeout. Redshirt junior Emily Costello (Webster, N.Y.) threw down the last two points for the Seawolves to seal the sweep
Notes
  • Books, along with sophomore Jordan Gels (Lewis Center, Ohio) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • Stony Brook put up strong defensive numbers against American, tallying 12.0 blocks as a team, with three players notching double-digit digs.
  • Brooks led the offense against American with 13 kills, reaching double figures for the fourth straight match in the category.
  • Stony Brook and Sacred Heart each totaled 37 kills in the match, but the Seawolves were the more efficient team, hitting at a .390 clip, compared to the Pioneers' .115 hitting percentage.
