ALBANY, N.Y. – After a back-and-forth first half that saw both teams trading baskets throughout, the Stony Brook men's basketball team was unable to keep up with Albany's second-half production and fell, 78-65, at SEFCU Arena Wednesday night. The Seawolves drop to 7-10 on the year, 2-1 in America East play, while Albany sits at 13-5, 1-2 in the league play.
Boals' Reaction
"We knew that [Albany] would have a sense of urgency coming out and whoever imposed their will was going to win the game," said head coach
Jeff Boals. "In the first half we missed about 15 layups against a non-shot-blocking team. The start of the second half I was disappointed. They made their run and we had to call an early timeout. Hats off to them, they were the better team for 40 minutes tonight."
Highlights
- Senior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) drew a charge in the early goings and senior Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.) capitalized with a three on the other end to get things started for the Seawolves.
- Stony Brook made four straight from beyond the arc, going up 12-6 at the first media timeout of the game.
- Albany battled back to regain its early lead and the two teams traded buckets for much of the remainder of the half, never letting the difference get larger than four.
- The Great Danes started the second half on a 13-4 run to go up double figures early on and force Stony Brook to burn a timeout.
- Junior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) kept the Seawolves in it, scoring the team's first six points of the new half. Albany was not phased, continuing to push and eventually making it a 20-point game.
- Stony Brook closed out the game with a 10-2 run but the difference was too much to overcome.
Notes
- Cornish returned to double figures with 10 points, also adding seven assists and five boards.
- Redshirt freshman Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) added nine points off the bench for the Seawolves, nearing the double-figure mark for the second time in his fourth career game.
- The Seawolves went 7-of-11 from three in the first half, but cooled off in the second, hitting just 3-of-9.
