Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stony Brook comes up short against UMBC

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Another one came down to the final minute for the Stony Brook men's basketball team, but the last attempt didn't go and the Seawolves fell to UMBC, 67-63. Stony Brook now sits at 8-15 on the year, 3-6 in league play, while the Retrievers move to 16-8 overall, 7-2 in the America East.

Boals' Reaction
"I thought that for the first 32 minutes we really competed and battled," said head coach Jeff Boals. "In the first eight minutes they got out to a 15-point lead on us, but once we settled down, we fought our way back into it. I thought we came out with great energy in the second half and we gave ourselves a chance to win the game at the end, but didn't execute."

Highlights
  • Stony Brook was first to score in the game, but the Retrievers quickly responded with a 9-3 run to gain some momentum early.
  • UMBC strung together 10 straight points to get its lead to 15 with 7:19 until halftime.
  • Freshman Anthony Ochefu (West Chester, Pa.) ended the drought for the Seawolves as he banked one in off the glass down low. Redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) kept things going when he knocked down back-to-back threes as part of a 17-2 Stony Brook run that tied the game at 30.
  • UMBC added a pair of field goals, including a late three to take a 35-30 lead into the break.
  • Stony Brook kept things close in the opening minutes of the new half and a three from senior UC Iroegbu (Sacramento, Calif.) followed by a layup by freshman Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) gave the Seawolves their first lead since the start of the game.
  • UMBC quickly took back the advantage and continued to answer every time the Seawolves got close.
  • Stony Brook saw the lead once more, and tied the game three times in the final eight minutes, but was unable to close it out late, despite being within a possession through the final minute.

Notes
  • Yeboah led the way with 20 points, 15 of which came in the first half. This is his eighth 20-plus point game of the season and the seventh time he has reached double figures in the first half.
  • This is the 11th time this season the Seawolves have had a game decided in the final minute of play.
