STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook women's soccer team made it back-to-back shutout victories at home with a commanding 4-0 win over Binghamton at LaValle Stadium Thursday night. Senior
Julie Johnstonbaugh put away a pair of goals midway through the first half to spark Stony Brook in the win. The Seawolves move to 8-5-1 on the season, 3-0-1 in league play, while Binghamton now sits at 7-4-2, 2-2-0 in the America East.
Faherty's Reaction
"It was great to get another result tonight against a really good Binghamton team," said head coach
Brendan Faherty. "They are a dangerous team that caused us some problems at the start of the game and in the beginning of the second half, but we were fortunate to be able to finish our chances. It was great to get a shutout and score some more goals, and I think again we were able to show the depth of our team."Â
Highlights
- Both teams came out attacking as each took attempts on goal in the opening minutes.Â
- Senior
Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) got Stony Brook on the board first as she knocked in a cross from the left end-line by sophomore
Fanny Gotesson (Varnamo, Sweden) in the 25th minute.Â
- Just two minutes later Gotesson got the ball in the left corner again and sent it into the box to an attacking Johnstonbaugh, who buried the redirect on nearly the same exact play.Â
- Each team took six shots in the opening period, but the Seawolves held the 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard at the break.Â
- In the 63rd minute, sophomore
Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.) headed the ball down to Johnstonbaugh, who brought it inside the 18 and sent a pass across the field to a crashing Gotesson, who was able to get a foot on it while in the air and put away a goal of her own.Â
- It was Chavkin again on the set-up in the 78th minute, when she slipped a pass through the defense to sophomore
Rachel Florenz (East Islip, N.Y.), who took two dribbles and sent her shot into the bottom right corner of the goal.Â
- Sophomore
Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) had a strong night in goal, finishing with seven saves.Â
- The Seawolves remain on track for their best start in America East play since the 2009 season.Â
