STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team is off to its best start since the 2012-13 season with a 97-61 win over Molloy on Wednesday night at Island Federal Arena.
Redshirt-sophomore
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) had a career night, posting 20 points and 10 rebounds. Both are new career highs as he posted his first double-double in a Seawolves uniform.
Junior forward
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) added 20 points and 10 boards as well, and freshman guard
Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) posted a 14-point night as the Seawolves pulled away with a 10-1 run to end the first half. They continued to distance themselves from the Lions in the second, executing an early 7-0 run in the half to pull up 21.
BOALS' REACTION
"We knew we'd get Molloy's best shot. I give them a lot of credit. We thought it would be a track meet and transition defense was going to be key for us. I thought, for the most part, we did a really good job with that. The great thing is that we're 4-1 and we still have a lot to work on. [Rhode Island] is going to be a great challenge for us."
HIGHLIGHTS
- Stony Brook jumped out fast, starting the night on a 10-2 run in the first 3:27. Latimer had four of his 14 during the stretch, including a three to end the spurt.
- The Lions rallied, cutting the lead down to five at 19-14 with 11:18 to go, but the Seawolves again answered with a quick 7-2 run to extend their lead to double digits.
- Heading into the half, Stony Brook went on a 10-1 run to pull up 17 at the halftime break, culminated by a Garcia rebound and layup as time expired.
- Coming out of the intermission, it was more of the same as the Seawolves scored seven of the first ten points to balloon the lead to 21 at 53-32.
- The Lions would not back down, however, as an 8-0 run brought the lead back down to 15, but that is as close as it would get.
- Garcia started another run, as a Jules Moor (Houston, Texas) three capped an 11-4 stretch that would bring Stony Brook's lead above 20 and the Seawolves would keep their distance the rest of the way.
NOTES
- Garcia's previous career highs were 14 points against George Washington earlier this season and seven rebounds in a conference game against Maine on January 3 of last season.
- This is the first time since January 18, 2016, that the Seawolves have won a game by 30 or more.
- Freshman forward Nick Aubry (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) made his first appearance for the Seawolves, drilling his first career shot attempt from beyond the arc.
- Freshman guard Hassan Ceesay (Newark, N.J.) also saw his first action for the Seawolves in the game.
- The 96 points are the most for the Seawolves this season and the most since their November 29 game against Shawnee State last season.
- 10 rebounds from both Yeboah and Garcia marks the first time the Seawolves have had multiple double-figure rebounders since Dec. 22, 2017, against Rutgers.
- Moor posted a career-high, scoring 10 points on the night. Moor chipped in five rebounds and a pair of assists as well.
- Sophomore Elijah Olaniyi's (Newark, N.J.) four assists mark a new career-high for him. He also added nine points and eight rebounds in the game.
