Seawolves' Season Comes to a Close in First Round of FCS Playoffs


CAPE GIRADEAU, Mo. – It was a tale of two halves in Saturday afternoon's first round NCAA Division I Championship game between No. 15 Stony Brook and No. 20 Southeast Missouri at Houck Field.
 
The Seawolves (7-5) led 14-0 after a solid first half performance, while the Redhawks (9-3) used three turnovers to score four third-quarter touchdowns to secure a 28-14 victory.
 
SCORING
  • Stony Brook cracked the scoring column first when RB Donald Liotine punched it in from two yards outs with 6:37 left in the second quarter. The PAT by K Alex Lucansky was good. The drive, highlighted by a 23-yard fourth-down pass from QB Joe Carbone to WR Julius Wingate, was six plays for 37 yards and took 2:56 off the clock.
  • The Seawolves added one more first-half score when QB Joe Carbone hit WR Julius Wingate in the end zone from 36 yards away with 1:54 left in the second quarter. The PAT by K Alex Lucansky was good. The drive was six plays for 70 yards and lasted 2:45.
  • Southeast Missouri got the second half scoring started when QB Daniel Santacaterina scrambled 16 yards for a touchdown with 13:19 left in the third quarter. The PAT by K Kendrick Tiller was good. The drive was four plays for 24 yards and took 0:55 off the clock.
  • SEMO knotted up the game when QB Daniel Santacaterina found WR Kristian Wilkerson in the right side of the end zone on a five-yard pass with 10:06 left in the third quarter. The PAT by K Kendrick Tiller was good. The drive was five plays for 38 yards and lasted 1:39.
  • The Redhawks took the lead with 7:44 left in the third quarter when QB Daniel Santacaterina hit WR Jerrick Orr in the end zone with a nine-yard pass. The PAT by K Kendrick Tiller was good. The drive was three plays for 40 yards and took 0:50 off the clock.
  • SEMO added another third-quarter touchdown when QB Daniel Santacaterina connected with WR Kristian Wilkerson on a 38-yard pass with 3:42 left in the quarter. The PAT by K Kenrick Tiller was good. The drive was one play for 38 yards and took 0:06.

  • Stony Brook gained 404 yards of total offense on 89 plays. SEMO had 240 yards of total offense on 65 plays.
  • The Seawolves had the ball for 35:03 minutes of the game.
  • PASSING: Stony Brook: 22-44-2 for 285 yards, one touchdown. SEMO: 13-29-0 for 136 yards, three touchdowns.

  • RB Jordan Gowins collected 73 rushing yards on 16 carries.
  • LB Shayne Lawless and Noah McGinty each had seven total tackles.

"I want to congratulate Southeast Missouri on the win. They came out in the second half and caused some turnovers, which they have done all year, and capitalized on it.   • WR Julius Wingate pulled down a touchdown reception in the second quarter for his sixth of the season and his career.
  • WR Julius Wingate pulled down eight catches for 143 yards and a touchdown to mark his first 100-plus receiving game of his career.
  • RB Donald Liotine scored his sixth rushing touchdown of the season and 23rd of his career in the second quarter. The score moved the senior into to fourth-place tie on Stony Brook's career rushing touchdowns list.
  • RB Donald Liotine finished the season with 1,148 rushing yards for the seventh on Stony Brook's single-season rushing list.
  • RB Donald Liotine finished his career with 4,077 career all-purpose yards (4th) and 2,826 career rushing yards (4th) to go with 583 career rushing carries (3rd).
  • QB Joe Carbone tossed a second-quarter touchdown pass to WR Julius Wingate for his 43rd TD pass of his career. He moved into a tie for third on Stony Brook's all-time list for touchdown passes. 
  • QB Joe Carbone collected 211 yards passing on 15-of-27 passing and finished the his career with 5,988 career passing yards (3rd), 504 pass completions (3rd) and 946 pass attempts (2nd).
  • LB Shayne Lawless collected seven total tackles against SEMO to move his career total to 288 and move him into fourth on Stony Brook's career list. Lawless also now has 40.5 career TFLs (3rd).
  • LB Noah McGinty collected seven total tackles against the Redhawks to bring his career total to 288 and move him into fourth on Stony Brook's career list.
  • TE Zach Lucas made the first start of his career at SEMO on Saturday.
  • QB Josh Zamot (special teams-kick return) made his collegiate debut on Saturday.
  • Captains for today's game were QB Joe Carbone, TE Cal Daniels, DE John Haggart, LB Noah McGinty and LB Shayne Lawless.
