Stony Brook Drops Battle of Long Island to Hofstra

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team recorded its first loss inside Island Federal Arena on Wednesday night, falling to Hofstra 71-64 in the Battle of Long Island.

Freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) recorded a career-high 22 points on the night, scoring 11 in each half and draining four threes to lead the Seawolves. Redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) battled his way to 15 points and sophomore Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) finished the night with eight points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals.

BOALS' REACTION
"It's always fun to play at home. I'm disappointed we didn't come up with the win. The big thing is our guys will always compete. They had a great player who made great plays down the stretch. There were some plays that we are going to look at that we would like to have back. When you play a really good team like that, you have to play a really good game."

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Seawolves jumped out of the gates early, scoring seven of the first 11 points with a Latimer three making it 7-4 inside of four minutes.
  • After Stony Brook went up 9-8 on a Yeboah layup, both teams went scoreless for a span of 4:40 before an Olaniyi layup extended the Seawolves lead to three.
  • Stony Brook's lead grew as big as five with 9:05 to play, but the Pride responded with a 14-2 run to go up 26-19 with less than five minutes to play. They would take a six-point advantage into the locker room.
  • Desure Buie extended Hofstra's lead to 13, its biggest point of the game, with 17:19 to go at 42-29, but Stony Brook would continue to battle.
  • A finger-roll finish and dunk in subsequent possessions for Olaniyi brought the Seawolves within five, at 44-39, with 11:43 to go in regulation.
  • Senior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) got the lead to two with 8:37 to go, but Hofstra answered with a three of its own to push the advantage back to five.
  • Stony Brook had the deficit at four on two occasions in the final two minutes but was not able to get closer than that.
NOTES
  • Stony Brook fell to 10-3 on the season and are now 4-1 at Island Federal Arena.
  • Latimer's previous career-high was 18, which he scored against LIU Brooklyn last Wednesday night.
  • His six rebounds also tie his career high, which he set at Rhode Island on November 24. He also led the Seawolves in scoring for the first time in his young career.
  • Cornish finished the night with eight points, hitting a pair of threes and both of his free throws.
  • Olaniyi's five assists are a new career high, previously set against Molloy on November 21.
  • Stony Brook has now hit 20 threes in its last two games, the most in a two-game stretch this season.
  • Powered by 13 offensive rebounds, the Seawolves put in 15 second-chance points to Hofstra's seven.
  • Stony Brook has now played in 11 games that were decided by ten points or less this season.
