Stony Brook Battles but a Late Run Decides it at No. 16 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team was within two goals in the fourth quarter, but No. 16 Penn State put together a late run and the Seawolves eventually fell, 15-8, at Panzer Stadium Saturday afternoon. Stony Brook moves to 0-2 on the year, while Penn State sits at 2-1.

Nagle's Reaction
"I thought the team showed competitive spirit that we did not shw in our first outing," said head coach Jim Nagle. " We just gave Penn State too many transition opportunities to win. We are a young team that will use this to get better."

Highlights
  • Penn State got out to a hot start, winning the first three face-offs of the game and scoring quickly on all three possessions.
  • The Seawolves came up with the fourth face-off and were able to capitalize as sophomore Chris Pickel, Jr., (Bayport, N.Y.) put away a pass from classmate Tom Haun (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) to get Stony Brook on the board.
  • The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the first quarter as Penn State held a 6-3 lead and a 9-1 advantage on the face-off.
  • Sophomore Owen Daly (East Rockaway, N.Y.) again battled through the contact to score his second goal of the day midway through the second quarter.
  • Penn State added a late goal in the closing seconds to take an 8-4 lead into the break.
  • Pickel, Jr., got things going on offense early in the third quarter for Stony Brook, and junior Ryland Rees (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) gave the Seawolves momentum late in the quarter as he fired one into the back of the cage in transition in the final 90 seconds.
  • Stony Brook carried the spark into the fourth quarter as Pickel, Jr., buried his third of the day in the first 65 seconds of the new period.
  • Penn State wasted no time and responded with three quick goals, tallying another six-goal quarter to distance itself late.

Notes
  • Daly made it back-to-back multi-goal games finishing with a pair. He entered the year with just two career goals.
  • Pickel, Jr., notched the first hat trick of his career as he put away three goals.
  • Rees matched his career best with three caused turnovers in the game.
  • Haun notched the 12th multi-point game of his career adding a pair of assists.
  • Freshman Ryan Erler (Smithtown, N.Y.) earned the decision after making the start and logging 52 minutes in goal. He was replaced by sophomore Michael Bollinger (Holbrook, N.Y.) in the fourth quarter.
