Stony Brook Begins the Season 1-1 in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, FLA. – The Stony Brook softball team finished the first of three days at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament with a 1-1 record. In their first game of the day, the Seawolves topped Wright State 5-2, but fell in the second game, to Florida Gulf Coast 2-1 at the Florida Gulf Coast Softball Complex Friday night.

"All in all, we had a solid first day and we competed hard in both games. It was great to see both pitchers give us 7 innings on day one, and offensively we did a lot of good things," said head coach Megan T. Bryant
 
Game 1: Stony Brook 5, Wright State 2
  • The Raiders got on the board in the second inning as Rebekah Lenos singled down the leftfield line and advanced on a double to right center by Kaitlyn Skinner. Skinner advanced on a passed ball before scoring on a single by Kelly Dillow.
  • The Seawolves responded in the bottom of the second. Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) drew a two out walk then advanced to second on a passed ball. Evans scored on a single to right field by Allyssa Malony (Runnemede, N.J.) advancing to second on the throw. Freshman Nicole McCarvill (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was able to bring her home with a single up the middle.  
  • After three quick innings for both teams, Stony Brook added on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Ileana Torres (Debary, Fla) singled up the middle and advanced to second on another single up the middle by Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) Torres and Rahrich advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single down the left field line by Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) putting the Seawolves up by two.
  • Stony Brook added one more in the bottom of the sixth inning after Malony singled to left field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a single to shortstop by Torres.  
  • Nicole McCarvill made her debut for the Seawovles starting at second base in her first collegiate game.
Game 2: Florida Gulf Coast 2, Stony Brook 1
  • Florida Gulf Coast was the first to get on the board. Brittany McGuire singled then advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Kate Kelly reached on an error and McGuire advanced to third. McGuire scored an error by Rivera. 
  • The Seawolves tied things up in the fourth when Torres singled to third and then advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) singled up the middle to score Torres.  
  • After two quick innings for both teams, Florida Gulf Coast added one run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs Brittany McGuire singled to the pitcher then was pitch ran for by Ahnie Jumper.  Jumper advanced to second on a single to left field by Lulu Newmark, then scored on a single from Bri Bennett to third base.   
  • Stony Brook threaten in the bottom of the seventh. Riley Craig (Thornton, Colo.) reached on an error, Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) singled to third advancing Craig to second. Malony walked forcing bases loaded. Unfortunately, the Eagles held the Seawolves and closed the game.  
Up Next
The Seawolves remain at Fort Myers for two more games on Saturday, Feb. 24. They will take on UConn at 12:15 p.m., before facing Southern Illinois at 2:30 p.m.
