Stony Brook Holds on to Top UMBC in AE Opener

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team held on to top UMBC, 7-6, at UMBC Stadium Sunday afternoon. Four Seawolves notched multi-point performances in the low-scoring affair as both teams opened league play. The Seawolves move to 2-5 on the year, while UMBC now sits at 2-5 as well.

Nagle's Reaction
"We had our best defensive effort of the season against a very disciplined and well-coached team," said head coach Jim Nagle. "Penalties let UMBC back in the game. I was proud the way our guys held on and got the W."

Highlights
- The Seawolves took advantage of an early man-up opportunity as freshman Jack Walsh (Miller Place, N.Y.) put away a pass from junior Owen Daly (East Rockaway, N.Y.).
- Sophomore Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.) closed out a strong first quarter for Stony Brook and made it a 2-0 game in the closing minutes.
- UMBC was able to get on the board with just under seven minutes remaining until the break, and tied the game at two-all with an EMO goal four minutes before halftime.
- The Seawolves took the momentum into the locker room as they closed out the half with two goals in the final 3:12. Senior Tyler Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) won the ensuing face-off to junior Ryland Rees (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) who sent it down field. It was freshman Patrick Kaschalk (Windsor, Ontario) that relayed it back to Anderson to put Stony Brook back on top 30 seconds later.
- White struck again just before the halftime horn, burying a pass from freshman Mike McCannell (Orangeville, Ontario).
- The Retrievers quickly tried to control play in the second half, scoring less than two minutes in, but Kaschalk wasted no time responding as he countered less than a minute later on a set-up by sophomore Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.).
- The Seawolves were flagged for a pair of penalties on the same play, awarding UMBC with a 30-second, 6-on-4 opportunity with 6:11 left in the third quarter. Stony Brook survived the man-down situation as sophomore goalie Michael Bollinger (Holbrook, N.Y.) stopped the Retrievers' only attempt.
- Daly got a goal of his own as he battled through the defense to find the back of the cage late in the third quarter. Walsh notched his second multi-goal game of the season after fellow freshman Danny Cassidy (Wading River, N.Y.) found him in transition to give the Seawolves a four-goal lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
- UMBC put away three straight goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to get back within a goal, but was never able to get any closer as the Seawolves held on for the victory.

Notes
- This was the first multi-goal game of the year for White, third of his career.
- Cassidy's assist marked the first point of his career as the defenseman made his fifth consecutive start in his debut season.
- Rees matched a season-best, scooping up four ground balls in the victory.
- Bollinger moved to 2-2 on the year, making his fourth straight start. He tallied six saves and limited the opponent to single-digit scoring for the second time this season.
