Grande's 3-Run Homer Not Enough in Seawolves' Season Finale Loss

LOWELL, Ma. – Despite sophomore SS Nick Grande's (Smithtown, N.Y.) three-run home run, the Stony Brook baseball team fell 5-3 to UMass Lowell in the regular season finale on Saturday morning at LeLacheur Park.

The Seawolves (29-23, 12-12 AE) trailed 4-0 to the River Hawks (24-27, 13-11 AE) before Grande's sixth home run of the season came in the third inning.

With the series win, UMass Lowell could finish as high as second in the conference standings and receive a first-round bye, while Stony Brook can be either the No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5 seed in next week's conference tournament, pending the outcome of the other games this weekend.

Turning Point
UMass Lowell was able to score four runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning, providing all the offense they would need for the victory.

Quoting Head Coach Matt Senk
"Their big inning turned out to be the difference today despite our guys competing until the final out. We are looking forward to the start of the third and most important part of the season beginning next Wednesday at Maine."

Notes/Stats

  • Sophomore SS Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) belted his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the third inning. It was his seventh home run of his career.
  • Grande recorded a pair of hits on Saturday for his 20th multi-hit game of the season.
