ALBANY, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team was unable to get by Vermont in the America East semifinals, falling 8-4 at Casey Stadium Thursday evening. After an evenly-matched first half, the Catamounts used a fourth-quarter run to pull away. Stony Brook finished the 2018 season at 7-8 on the year, while Vermont moved to 12-3.
Nagle's Reaction
"I'm proud of this team. It's a young team that was co-regular season champions and the future is really bright," said head coach
Jim Nagle. "Hats off to Vermont today, we just couldn't seem to put the ball in the cage. They scored about the same as the last time we played, and we didn't. We had a lot of opportunities but weren't able to convert."
Highlights
- It was an evenly-matched first half as the two teams traded goals throughout. Freshman Mike McCannell (Orangeville, Ontario) got Stony Brook on the board first as he buried a pass from sophomore Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.).
- Freshman Jack Walsh (Miller Place, N.Y.) set up McCannell late in the opening period to give the Seawolves a 2-1 lead.
- Sophomore Chris Pickel, Jr., (Bayport, N.Y.) put the advantage back in Stony Brook's favor after Vermont answered early in the second quarter. He put away the feed from classmate Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) with just under three minutes until the break.
- The Catamounts were able to even it up before halftime and tacked on the only goal of the third quarter to take a 5-3 lead into the final period.
- White broke up a three-goal Vermont run nearing the midway point in the fourth quarter, but the Seawolves were unable to get anything else going.
Notes
- Walsh's assist extended his points streak to 13 games.
- McCannell closed out the season with multiple points in each of the final three games.
- Pickel, Jr., made it seven straight games with a goal.
- Sophomore Michael Bollinger (Holbrook, N.Y.) made the start in cage and tallied nine saves in 59 minutes of action. Despite the loss, he held the opponent to single-digit scoring for the sixth time this season.
