2018 Season Preview: The QBs

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The quarterback position of the Stony Brook football team features captain and returning starter Joe Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn./Xavier HS).

Guided by Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach Carmen Felus, Carbone experienced major growth in production and efficiency during the 2017 season. Carbone led an offense that scored nearly 30 points per game and finished seventh in the nation in red zone efficiency. His 23 total touchdowns to only eight interceptions produced a quarterback efficiency rating of 129.9 that places third for returning starters in the CAA and top 30 of all returning QB's in the nation.

Carbone's 204 completions in 2017 set a Stony Brook single season record. He also tossed at least two touchdowns in 10 games and eclipsed the 200-yard passing mark six times, including a career high 272 against Delaware.

Needless to say, Carbone statistically had a dazzling 2017 season, but his ability to operate at his best in high pressure situations will be what the 2018 Seawolves must continue to build off of. Carbone helped engineer second half comeback victories four times in 2017 – which included an overtime win vs. Albany and a last play Hail Mary win on the road against Maine.

"I'm excited to get back on the field with the team, and to build upon the season we had last year as an offense and as a football program," Carbone said looking forward to 2018.

Waiting in the wings are a set of super sophomores Tyquell Fields (Yonkers, N.Y./ Archbishop Stepinac) and Jack Cassidy (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot). Both Fields and Cassidy have gained quality experience on the field in CAA Football play over the early part of their careers. Fields possesses elite dual threat ability and head coach Chuck Priore featured him as a weapon in special situations throughout the 2017 campaign. Cassidy started at UAlbany as a true freshman in 2016 before redshirting this past fall.

Overall, the quarterback position at Stony Brook will be experienced, tough and talented and will again seek to lead the team back to the Division I FCS playoffs in 2018.
