Seawolves Unable to Get By Oregon in Opener

EUGENE, Ore. -- The Stony Brook women's soccer team was unable to get by Oregon, falling 2-1 in its season opener Friday night. The Seawolves were the first on the board in the game, and a strong defensive hold in the second half kept Stony Brook in it until the end.

Faherty's Reaction
"For our first game of the season, we are happy with the way we competed over 90 minutes against a solid Oregon side," said head coach Brendan Faherty. "Unfortunately the Ducks were able to capitalize on a few of our mistakes and that was the difference in the match. We will grow from this match - we will focus on fixing the mistakes, while also highlighting the positive play we had on both sides of the ball."

Highlights
- The Seawolves took the first attempt on goal as sophomore Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.) sent a free kick to the top left corner of the goal, but Oregon's keeper stretched out to make the stop in the 11th minute.
- Sophomore Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) made a big save in the 18th minute, and the defense was able to clear out the ensuing corner kick to send Stony Brook down the field and keep the game scoreless early on.
- In the 26th minute, Chelsie DePonte (Honolulu, Hawaii) slipped a pass through traffic to an attacking Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who was able to find the back of the goal and give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead.
- Oregon put away the equalizer in the 37th minute, striking from just beyond the penalty spot to make it a 1-1 game at the half.
- The Ducks were able to tack on another goal in the 63rd minute with a one-timer from six yards out to make it a 2-1 game.
- Stony Brook did not slow its attack and eventually out-shot the Ducks 8-7 in the second half.
