STONY BROOK, N.Y– The Stony Brook volleyball team returns to the road this weekend, traveling to Ohio for the Akron Tournament. The Seawolves will face Maryland, Akron and Canisius through the weekend. Stony Brook will look to bounce back after falling to Hofstra in three sets Tuesday night. This is the second of four early season tournaments for the Seawolves. 
 
Scouting Maryland
Maryland enters the weekend with a 2-1 record after their first weekend of play at the Wake Forest/UNCG Tournament. The Terps picked up two wins against Wake Forest and North Carolina-Greensboro, before falling to Air Force in five sets. Sophomore outside hitter Erika Prichard leads the Terps averaging 4.00 kills per set, giving her a total of 44 kills for the season so far. 
 
Scouting Akron
Akron enters the weekend with a 2-1 record after their first weekend of play at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic. The Zips picked up their two wins against Cal State Fullerton and Montana, and their loss came against Eastern Washington in four sets. Senior left side hitter Kayla Gwozdz leads the Zips averaging 3.29 kills per set, giving her a total of 46 kills for the season so far. Sophomore setter Emily Weigand plays a role in the Zips' success averaging 7.64 assists per set. 
 
Scouting Canisius
Canisius fell to 1-2 on the year after their first weekend of play at the CSU Invitational. The Golden Griffins defeated Binghamton, but lost to Montana State and Cleveland State. Freshman right side hitter Melina Woods leads Canisius averaging 2.42 kills per set.
 
Costello and Sakowicz Earn Conference Honors
Graduate student Emily Costello (Webster, N.Y.) and junior LeAnne Sakowicz (Wauconda, Ill.) received America East honors this week. Costello was Player of the Week and Sakowicz was Setter of the Week. 
Costello averaged 3.46 kills per set and 2.76 digs per set in the South Florida Tournament. This was the first America East Player of the Week award of her career. 
Sakowicz averaged a conference-best 10.62 assists per set through the weekend, tallying a total of 138 assists to start the 2018 season. 
 
The Road to 1,000!
Senior McKyla Brooks (Blasdell, N.Y.) has notched 50 kills so far this season giving her a total of 949 for her career.
