STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook women's soccer team notched its fourth shutout win of the season as it cruised past Delaware State, 3-0, at LaValle Stadium Friday night. Sophomore
Chelsie DePonte helped lead the way with a goal and an assist as the Seawolves gave up just three shots in the game. Stony Brook moves to 5-5-0 in its final non-conference game of the year, while Delaware State now sits at 2-8-1.
Faherty's Reaction
"It was good to get another win, another shutout at home," said head coach
Brendan Faherty. "We are now 2-0 at home, and we've talked a lot about how we aren't playing many home games this year, so we need to make the most of every opportunity. To score three goals and create a ton of chances, especially in the first half, I'm really happy for our group as we head into conference play on Sunday."Â
Highlights
- Sophomore
Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was able to get Stony Brook on the board early as she was tripped up in the box 8 minutes into the game and put away her third penalty kick of the year on as many tries.Â
- The Seawolves nearly added a second goal in the 15th minute when sophomore
Fanny Gotesson (Varnamo, Sweden) sent the ball into the box and her classmate

- Stony Brook outshot the Hornets 10-0 in the first half, with a 1-0 lead at the break.Â
- Sophomore
Rachel Florenz (East Islip, N.Y.) tried to extend the lead as she blew by the Delaware State goalie for a wide-opener look at the net on the feed from freshman
Mari Brenden (Oslo, Norway), but was flagged for offsides and the goal was called back.Â
- In the 73rd minute Stony Brook finally tacked on another goal as senior
Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) lifted her shot over the keeper from 12 yards out, after DePonte chipped the pass over the defense from the left side to set up the goal.Â
- DePonte buried a goal of her own in the 76th minute, getting ahold of a redirected serve from sophomore
Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.) to give the Seawolves a 3-0 lead.Â
- Stony Brook finished with a 14-3 edge on shots, with 12 going on target.Â
