Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Smothering Defense Leads Stony Brook to Fifth Straight Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – In another standout defensive performance, the Stony Brook men's basketball team defeated New Hampshire 62-44 at Island Federal Arena on Saturday night in front of 2,817 fans.

Sophomore Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.)led all scorers with 15 points, while freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.)recorded his first-career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)and senior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas)rounded out the Seawolves in double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.

BOALS' REACTION
"I think our defense dominated. There wasn't a great flow to the first half, but I think the stretch where we started to take over was when guys were diving on the floor and getting loose balls. That allowed us to get out in transition and get some easy baskets. We were able to finish the game off from there."

HIGHLIGHTS
  • New Hampshire started fast, scoring eight of the first 12 points of the night, with a Jayden Martinez three putting the Wildcats up 8-4 with 14:53 to go in the half.
  • The Seawolves took their first lead with 9:14 to go on a pair of Olaniyi free throws. This was part of a bigger 12-4 run to put Stony Brook up four.
  • Olaniyi and Latimer combined for the final four points that allowed the Seawolves to take a five-point lead into the halftime break.
  • Stony Brook was fast out of the second-half gate, scoring the first seven points with a Yeboah triple giving the team a 33-21 lead just over two minutes into the half.
  • New Hampshire was only able to get the lead as close as 11 in the second half, with Stony Brook continuing to keep the Wildcats at arm's length.
  • After Olaniyi's layup put Stony Brook up by 15, New Hampshire cut the lead down to 12 before the Seawolves rattled off 12 in a row to extend the lead to the largest point, 24, with 6:10 left.
