Offensive Struggles Send Seawolves to Loss

BALTIMORE, Md. – Despite the sixth double-double of the season from redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England), the Stony Brook men's basketball team fell to UMBC 57-49 at the UMBC Events Center on Wednesday night.

Yeboah finished the night with 14 points and 12 rebounds, but Stony Brook struggled from the field shooting 17-for-55 overall and 2-22 from long range on a night which they held UMBC's offense to 37 percent and 31 percent from the field and 3-point range, respectively.

BOALS' REACTION
"I thought we were getting some good looks in the second half, but we weren't making the shots that we've been hitting. We were able to cut the lead down to six but they hit a wide open three in the corner. We did not get off to a great start in the first or second halves, but I thought in the second half that we battled but just weren't able to get over the hump."

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Both offenses started slow, with the teams combining for seven points in the first five minutes. Stony Brook had a 4-3 lead heading into the first timeout.
  • Five in a row after a Yeboah and-1 and a sophomore Corry Long (Cincinnati, Ohio) steal and layup, Stony Brook's lead was as large as it would get on the afternoon at 11-8 with 11:46 to play in the half.
  • UMBC responded with an 11-2 run over a span of 6:08, taking a six-point lead at 19-13 with 5:39 to go in the period.
  • The teams traded buckets down the stretch, with five in a row for the Seawolves making it a six-point game at the break.
  • The Retrievers' lead went to 13 with 14:20 to go in regulation with UMBC scoring 11 of the first 13 points of the period.
  • Sophomore Jeff Otchere (Bronx, N.Y.) sparked a comeback for the Seawolves, as Stony Brook cut the lead down to seven with a pair of dunks in the half. The latter of the dunks made it 44-37 with 5:48 left.
  • Stony Brook was not able to rebound, as five straight points ballooned the lead to 12 with 4:29 to go and the Retrievers kept their distance the rest of the way.
NOTES
  • Yeboah's double-double is also the 12thof his career and second in as many nights.
  • He has now hit double figures in scoring in all 20 of his starts in which he plays at least 10 minutes.
  • UMBC's 36.5 percent shooting night is the second-highest percentage for an America East opponent this season.
  • In addition, the Seawolves have now held teams below 60 in three of the team's seven games in the league this season.
  • Freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) hit a three in his eighth consecutive contest and 21stof his collegiate career.
  • The Seawolves have shot 80 percent from the free throw line (when attempting 10 or more) in back to back games for the second time this season and the first time since the South Carolina and Holy Cross contests in November.
