STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Redshirt-junior
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) recorded a double double with 22 points and 12 rebounds but it was not enough as the Stony Brook men's basketball team fell to UAlbany 74-70 in front of 3,210 fans at Island Federal Arena on Thursday night.
Along with Yeboah's output, redshirt-sophomore
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) chipped in 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting while sophomore
Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) scored nine points and hauled in eight rebounds.
BOALS' REACTION
"It was a great crowd, great student section tonight. It was your typical Stony Brook-Albany rivalry game. I really feel like we let a great opportunity slip out of our hands tonight. Give Albany a lot of credit. The first four minutes set the tone for the game. I thought we battled but we just couldn't get over the hump. We'd tie get, go down one, down two, but just couldn't really get the stops we needed to get a lead and build on it."
HIGHLIGHTS
- Both teams started fast with a combined 19 points going on the board inside the first four minutes. Yeboah was good for all eight during this span, with Albany retaining an 11-8 advantage.
- After Albany built a six-point advantage at 14-8, the Seawolves responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead. Garcia scored five during the span, while Yeboah scored the other layup to give the Seawolves a 15-14 lead with 12:50 left.
- The Great Danes responded with six in a row and took over the lead at 20-15 and would not allow Stony Brook to lead the rest of the way, taking a 36-33 advantage into the break.
- Stony Brook started the second with four quick points out of the break, with Yeboah and Olaniyi finishing inside to give the Seawolves a 37-36 lead with 18:38 left in regulation.
- Albany regained the advantage and had it at 48-47 with 12:27 to go before making their big run, a 17-7 run over a 4:33 span to extend the lead to 11 with 7:54 to play.
- The Seawolves were able to cut the lead down to three with 2.4 seconds left on a Garcia layup, but Albany threw it long on the in-bound and was able to draw a foul with under a second left and keep Stony Brook from having a chance at a tie.
