FORT COLLINS, COLO. - The Stony Brook softball team fell to Idaho State and Colorado State in the first day of the Colorado State Classic on Friday. The Seawolves fell to the Bengals 10-8, and 9-1 to the Rams.
COACH BRYANT'S THOUGHTS
"We swung the bats well in game one and that was great to see for our first game of the season. CSU is a very balanced team with quality wins and a lot of games played. We have some good takeaways from today and it's all about improving day to day."
GAME 1: IDAHO STATE 10, STONY BROOK 8
- The Bengals got on the board right away in the top of the first on a leadoff single by Courtney Wiley. Wiley got to second on a sac bunt, and then came home after back-to-back singles.
- The Seawolves responded right back in the bottom of the first. Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) led off with a single, advanced to second on a hit by Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) and scored on a throwing error to tie the game up at one.
- The Seawolves took a 2-1 lead after Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) drove in Rahrich with a RBI double down the left field line.
- In the top of the second, Idaho State took a 4-2 lead after the Bengals loaded the bases with a single, and Emma Bordenkecher drove in two with a double.
- The Seawolves made it 4-3 in the bottom of the second after a leadoff homer by Riley Craig (Thornton, Colo.).
- Idaho State added two more runs in the top of the third making it 6-3 with an RBI single and a sac fly.
- Stony Brook made it 6-4 in the bottom of the third after Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Rahrich brought her home with an RBI single.
- The Bengals pulled away with an 8-4 lead in the top of the fourth after they loaded the bases and scored two on a fielding error.
- In the top of the fifth, Pechin came in to pitch for the Seawolves and surrendered a home run to Bordenkecher making it 9-4 Bengals.
- Hering continued her solid day at the plate leading off the bottom of the fifth with a single, and eventually came around to score on another RBI single by Rahrich.
- Idaho State ended their scoring in the top of the seventh after a homer by MaKenzie Van Sickle made it 10-5.
- The Seawolves got three runs in the bottom of the seventh after a two run homer by Rahrich followed by homer by Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.).
GAME 2: COLORADO STATE 9, STONY BROOK 1
- The Rams got out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first after they had two on from a walk and error. Their first run came from throwing error, and their next two came from a groundout then a homer.
- The Seawolves got their lone run of the game after Taylor Juenke (Sammamish, Wash.) walked and Jordyn Nowakowski (San Diego, Calif.) drove her in with a RBI double.
- The Rams made it 5-1 in the bottom of the third after a two run homer by Danni Klein.
- Colorado ended their scoring tacking on four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
NOTES
- Rahrich had a strong performance at the plate, recording five hits on the day.
- Juenke, Lindsey Osmer (Martinez, Calif.), Alina Lance (New Athens, Ill.)and Shelbi Denman (Las Vegas, Nev.) all made their Seawolves debuts.
