Seawolves Take Down Georgetown and George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Stony Brook softball team picked up two wins on day two of the Buff and Blue Challenge on Saturday. The Seawolves defeated Georgetown 8-1, and George Washington 6-5 in an eight inning thriller.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK 8, GEORGETOWN 1
  • The Seawolves got on the board in the bottom of the first when Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) singled, Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) followed with another single, and Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) flied out advancing Hering to third. Hering then stole home and Corr stole second making it 1-0 on the double steal.
  • Stony Brook added two more runs in the first on a two-run homer by Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) making it 3-0. 
  • The Hoyas scored their lone run of the game in the top of the third after a leadoff double came around to score on an RBI groundout.
  • The Seawolves tacked on a run in the bottom of the third after Rivera doubled and Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) brought her home on a RBI double making it 4-1.
  • Stony Brook added four in the bottom of the fifth after Rahrich and Rivera singled and a groundout advanced them to second and third, Lindsey Osmer (Martinez, Calif.) brought them home on an RBI single making it 6-1. 
  • The Seawolves then added two more after Alina Lance (New Athens, Ill.) singled bringing in Osmer, and then Lance came in to score on an error making it 8-1.
 
NOTES VS. GEORGETOWN
  • Shelbi Denman (Las Vegas, Nev.) went all seven innings in the circle for the Seawolves only giving up the one run.
  • Denman's win in the circle is the first of her college career.
  • Hering and Corr each had two hits, and Rivera had three in the game. 
 
GAME 2: STONY BROOK 6, GEORGE WASHINGTON 5
  • The Colonials opened the scoring first with two runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single making it 2-0.
  • The Seawolves got three runs in the top of the fourth after Corr doubled to start the inning and came home on an error making it 2-1. Rivera then gave the Seawolves a 3-2 lead on her second home run of the day.
  • George Washington tied the game at three in the bottom of the fourth when a leadoff single eventually came around to score on a groundout.
  • The Colonials tacked on two in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff homer and an RBI single making it 5-3.
  • Stony Brook responded in the top of the sixth tying the game up at five after Rivera walked and Osmer singled, Riley Craig (Thornton, Colo.) drove them in on an RBI single.
  • The Colonials had chances to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the Seawolves shut them down with two plays at the plate.
  • The Seawolves got their winning run in the top of the eighth after Rahrich was placed on second, Rivera brought her home on an RBI single.
 
NOTES VS. GEORGE WASHINGTON
  • Rahrich went all eight innings in the circle, getting her first victory of the season.
  • Hering, Corr, Rivera, and Osmer all tallied two hits.
 
ON DECK
The Seawolves close out play at the Buff and Blue Challenge against Oakland at 10 am on Sunday.
