STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook men's basketball team's postseason journey begins on Wednesday when they play in the first round of the 2019 Roman College Basketball Invitational. The Seawolves will head to Tampa, Fla. to take on the Bulls of South Florida at 7 p.m.
"Our team is very excited to compete in a postseason tournament," interim head coach
Geno Ford said. "We had a terrific regular season on our way to 24 wins. With a roster full of underclassmen, we feel like gaining some postseason experience will greately benefit us in the future."
They are playing in the Roman CBI for the fourth time in the last five seasons, looking to win the tournament for the first time. The Seawolves are coming off a 24-win season, the highest regular-season win total in the program's Division I history. Stony Brook finished inside the top two of the America East standings for the fourth time in the last five seasons en route to the landmark regular season that included 13 road wins, tied for the most in the country.
The Seawolves will be led by First Team All-Conference member
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England), who led the team in scoring (16.6 points per night) and rebounding (7,8 rebounds per night) during the campaign that featured wins over a Southeastern Conference opponent (South Carolina) and a pair of Atlantic 10 opponents (Rhode Island and George Washington). Stony Brook also defeated Northern Iowa, who advanced to the championship game in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
Stony Brook also features the Sixth Man of the Year in the America East, redshirt-sophomore
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) and the Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore
Jeff Otchere (Bronx, N.Y.).
South Florida started the season 17-6, losing seven of the last nine games including a first-round exit in the American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. It will be the Seawolves first game in the state of Florida in the Division I era.
