FAIRFIELD, CONN.- The Stony Brook softball team split a doubleheader with Sacred Heart on Tuesday. The team defeated the Pioneers 8-3 in game one, and dropped game two by a score of 7-5.
COACH BRYANT'S THOUGHTS
"We did what we needed to do offensively in game one, our defense was solid and Mel finished strong. In the second game we gave it a great fight at the end but needed to make our adjustments earlier. We will take winning 10 out of 11 games and learn from today."
GAME 1: STONY BROOK 8, SACRED HEART 3
- The Pioneers got on the board first in the bottom of the second on a leadoff homer making it 1-0.
- The Seawolves tied the game up at one in the top of the third after Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) doubled, Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) brought her home on a RBI double.
- Sacred Heart scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer making it 3-1.
- Stony Brook had a four-run top of the fifth that started after Corr singled and Rahrich was hit by a pitch, Rivera brought home Corr on a RBI single making it 3-2.
- Riley Craig (Thornton, Colo.) came up to bat and hit a three-run homer driving in Rahrich and Danielle Petrovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) who was pinch running for Rivera making it 5-3.
- The Seawolves completed their scoring in the top of the sixth after Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) and Corr walked, Rahrich drove them in on a three-run homer making it 8-3.
NOTES
- Rahrich had another strong performance in the circle pitching all seven innings only giving up three runs.
- Rahrich picked up her fifth win of the season.
- Craig's homer was her fourth of the season.
- Rahrich's homer was her sixth of the season.
GAME 2: SACRED HEART 7, STONY BROOK 5
- Stony Brook got on the board first in the top of the second on a home run by Jordyn Nowakowski (San Diego, Calif.).
- The Pioneers scored a pair in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer making it 2-1.
- Sacred Heart scored a pair again in the bottom of the fourth after a single and walk came around to score on a RBI double making it 4-1.
- The Pioneers made it 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run followed by a solo homer.
- The Seawolves had a four-run top of the seventh that began with Nowakowski's second home run of the game making it 7-2.
- The inning continued after Ally Dabroski (Cedar Grove, N.J.) walked, Petrovich singled to second, Hering reached on a fielder's choice and Corr reached on an error to load the bases, Rahrich was hit by a pitch making it 7-3.
- Rivera brought home Corr and Hering on a RBI single it make it a 7-5 game, but the rally came up short with the Pioneers holding on for the win.
NOTES
- Shelbi Denman (Las Vegas, Nev.) started in the circle for the Seawolves and went three innings, taking her second loss of the season giving up four runs.
- Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) went the other three innings in the circle giving up three runs.
- Nowakowski's home runs in the game were her first two of the season.
