Three Grand Slams Power Stony Brook to Record Setting Win at St. John’s

QUEENS, N.Y.- Led by three grand slams, two solo homers, timely hitting, and seven strong in the circle by Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.), the Stony Brook softball team cruised to its 12th win of the season against St. John's on Wednesday. The Seawolves rolled by the Red Storm in a offensive explosion final score of 25-6.
 
The Seawolves got grand slams from Alina Lance (New Athens, Ill.), Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) and Rahrich. Riley Craig (Thornton, Colo.) and Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) added solo homers.
 
Stony Brook also scored a total of 14 runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. 
 
SCORING SUMMARY (INNINGS 1-6)
  • St. John's got on the board first scoring a pair in the bottom of the first after a double came around to score on a RBI double making it 1-0, and then scored another on a throwing error making it 2-0.
  • Stony Brook had a six-run top of the third that started after Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.), Lindsey Osmer (Martinez, Calif.) and Craig walked to load the bases, Ally Dabroski (Cedar Grove, N.J.) brought home Pechin on a RBI single making it 2-1.
  • Lance then came up to bat and hit the first grand slam of the game bringing home Osmer, Craig and Dabroski, giving the Seawolves a 5-2 lead. 
  • The top of the third continued after the first grand slam when Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) reached on a error and stole second, Corr brought her home on a RBI single making it 6-2.
  • Rivera hit her solo home run in the fourth making it 7-2.
  • The Red Storm added a run in the bottom of the fourth after a batter reached on error, and came around to score on a RBI single making it 7-3 Seawolves.
  • The Red Storm made it a two-run game in the bottom of the fifth after they scored a pair making it 7-5.
  • Craig hit her solo home run in the top of the sixth making it 8-5.
  • The Seawolves got three more after the Craig homerun after Lance walked, Corr singled, and Rahrich brought home Lance on a RBI single making it 9-5.
  • Stony Brook made it 10-5 after Rivera singled bringing home Corr.
  • The Seawolves added their last run of the sixth after Pechin brought home Rahrich on a RBI single making it 11-5.
 
SCORING SUMMARY (SEVENTH INNING)
  • The 14 run inning in which the team batted around started after Dabroski and Lance walked and Jordyn Nowakowski (San Diego, Calif.) singled to load the bases, Corr hit the second grand slam of the day making it 15-5.
  • After the second grand slam, Rivera doubled, Pechin walked, and Osmer brought them home on a RBI triple making it 17-5.
  • Craig walked to continue the inning, and Dabroski doubled to bring home Osmer making it 18-5.
  • Lance made it 19-5 bringing home Craig on a RBI single.
  • Hering kept the hitting parade going with a RBI single driving in Dabroski making it 20-5.
  • Corr walked to keep the inning going to load the bases for Rahrich, who hit the third and final grand slam of the game making it 24-5.
  • The scoring wasn't done after the third grand slam of the game, after Rivera walked, and Pechin doubled, Osmer brought home Rivera on a RBI single making it 25-5.
  • The Red Storm tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh making it 25-6, but it wasn't enough to overcome the offensive explosion by the Seawolves.
 
NOTES
  • Corr's grand slam was her first home run of the season.
  • Rahrich's grand slam was her seventh home run of the season.
  • Lance's grand slam was her second grand slam of the season. 
  • Rivera's solo homer was her fifth of the season.
  • Craig's homer was her fifth of the season.
  • The 14 run seventh inning is the most the team has scored in an inning in program history.
  • Rahrich went all seven innings in the circle, giving up only four earned runs.
  • Rahrich picked up her sixth victory of the season, and now has a winning record of 6-5.
  • For the first time since March 28, 2000, the Seawolves defeated St. John's.
  • The 18 walks in the victory are a program record.
  • The five home runs in the win are a program record.

ON DECK
The Seawolves will open conference play on Saturday when they head to Hartford for a doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
