Stony Brook Drops Quarterfinal Bout with Binghamton

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team fell in the 2019 America East Quarterfinals on Saturday night, dropping a 78-72 decision to Binghamton at Island Federal Arena in front of 3,108 fans. Sophomore Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) finished one point off his career high with 27 points to lead the Seawolves and senior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) and redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) chipped in 13 each but Stony Brook's run fell just short.

BOALS' REACTION
"There was an awesome atmosphere tonight. They've been like that all year long. The loss is disappointing but our guys battled in the second half as they have all year. When you're in a one and done situation and another team has confidence, it's tough to overcome. We couldn't quite get over the hump. Towards the end, they missed some free throws and we got some shots. Give Binghamton a lot of credit. I think they played a great game."

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Seawolves scored seven of the game's first 11 points, with back to back Cornish jumpers making it 7-4 Seawolves with 16:38 to play.
  • Binghamton took its first lead 110 seconds later on a Sessoms three at 12-11.
  • After Cornish gave Stony Brook the lead back, Binghamton went on a 13-2 run to go up 25-15 with 9:30 to go after Sessoms hit a three.
  • The lead grew to 18 on a bucket with less than a minute to go and Binghamton went into the locker room with a 43-25 lead.
  • The Bearcats lead got to 24 before Stony Brook made its big run, hitting back to back threes to cut it to 18 with 15:23 to go in regulation.
  • A 10-0 run capped by a redshirt-sophomore Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) layup made it 59-50 with 8:57 to play in regulation.
  • Cornish appeared to get the deficit to two with 32.4 on the clock but, after a lengthy review, the blocking foul was changed to a charge and the lead was restored back to four.
  • The Bearcats scored six straight to put the game out of reach.
NOTES
  • Olaniyi's career high was set five weeks ago when he scored 28 against Hartford. 20 of those came in the first half.
  • The Seawolves' 24 wins are the third-most in the team's Division I era and the most ever in a regular season.
  • Freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) finished with a career-high four assists.
  • Cornish finished in double figures for the seventh time in the last nine games.
  • Stony Brook's 47 second-half points are tied for the second-most the Seawolves have had against Division I opposition this season.
