Seawolves Split Doubleheader Against Binghamton

STONY BROOK, N.Y.-The Stony Brook softball team split a doubleheader with Binghamton on Saturday. The team dropped game one by a score of 6-3, but took game two 3-2. 
 
Shelbi Denman (Las Vegas, Nev.) was stellar in the circle in game two, going all seven innings in the circle, only giving up two runs. Denman struck out six, and earned her sixth victory of the season.

"It was good to see us respond after the first game and play better softball to win game two. Shelbi threw a great game and our defense backed her up. It's all about executing and doing our jobs and having that edge."
 
GAME 1: BINGHAMTON 6, STONY BROOK 3
  • Binghamton got on the board in the top of the first after a leadoff walk came around to score on an error making it 1-0.
  • The Bearcats scored three in the top of the fifth making it 4-0.
  • Stony Brook scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.), driving in Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) after she singled earlier in the inning. The Bearcats lead was trimmed to 4-2. 
  • Binghamton responded in the top of the sixth, driving in a leadoff walk making it 5-2, and bringing in another run on a RBI single making it 6-2.
  • The Seawolves tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh after Alina Lance (New Athens, Ill.) reached on an error, Rahrich brought her home on a RBI double making it 6-3.
 
NOTES 
  • Rahrich went 4.2 innings in the circle, giving up three earned runs.
  • Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) went the other 2.1 innings in the circle, giving up two runs. 
  • Rahrich went four for four at the plate, picking up three RBIs. Her home run was her ninth of the season.
 
GAME 2: STONY BROOK 3, BINGHAMTON 2
  • Binghamton got on the board in the top of the second after a leadoff single eventually came around to score on a RBI single making it 1-0.
  • Stony Brook scored all three runs in the bottom of the third. After Hering led off with a single, Rahrich doubled, Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) brought home Hering on a RBI single making it 1-1.
  • Nicole McCarvill (Clifton Park, N.Y.) brought home Rahrich on a RBI single making it 2-1.
  • Riley Craig (Thornton, Colo.) drove in Rivera on a RBI single making it 3-1.
  • Binghamton tacked on a run in the top of the sixth on a solo homer, but Denman stopped the scoring there. 
 
NOTES
  • Denman went all seven innings in the circle, giving up two runs.
  • Denman is now 6-2 on the season. 
  • Rivera tallied two hits in the victory. 
  • With the split of the doubleheader, the Seawolves are 3-2 in conference play.

The Seawolves will close out the three-game home series against Binghamton tomorrow in a single game at 12 pm
