COLLEGE PARK, Md. – All it took was one shot in overtime by
Nicole Barretta (Exton, Pa.) to send the No. 14 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team past No. 9 James Madison and onto the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The game winner came at the 4:41 mark of overtime after
Rayna Sabella (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) found Barretta and the rest is history as the Seawolves took down the 2018 national champion Dukes, 10-9, on Friday night at Capital One Field.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Joe Spallina
"What an incredible lacrosse game. We tip our caps to James Madison and we have respect for what they did last year. They did something for the mid-majors that set that tone and expectation. For us, this was a great win. I don't think it looked great at the half and then we went down by three at one point but I thought we showed resiliency in a lot of ways. That game was a microcosm of our season where we got off to a tough start but we weathered the storm, weathered the punches and righted the ship and were able to find our way."
HIGHLIGHTS
