WEST HARTFORD, CONN.- Led by a solid pitching performance by
Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) and a four RBI day for
Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.), the Stony Brook softball team took down Binghamton in the first round of the America East Tournament on Wednesday. The Seawolves defeated the Bearcats by a score of 7-3.
Rahrich went all seven innings in the circle, striking out eight. With the victory, the junior is now 17-11 on the season.
Rivera paced the offense with three hits and four RBIs in the game. The Sylmar, California native hit a big bases clearing double in the second to extend the team's lead

"We gave a solid effort today to start the tournament off with a win. Offensively, we set a good tone and defensively came up with big plays to help us keep momentum at key times."
SCORING SUMMARY
- The Seawolves scored a pair in the bottom of the first. After Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) was hit by a pitch and Rahrich singled, Rivera brought home Corr on a RBI double making it 1-0.
- The inning continued after Taylor Pechin (Harrington, Del.) walked, Jordyn Nowakowski (San Diego, Calif.) brought home Rahrich on a sac fly making it 2-0.
- Stony Brook scored three in the bottom of the second. After Lindsey Osmer (Martinez, Calif.) singled, Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) doubled and Corr was hit by another pitch to load the bases, Rivera brought them all home on a RBI double making it 5-0.
- Binghamton got on the board in the top of the fourth when a single came around to score on a RBI double making it 5-1.
- The Seawolves tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth. After Alina Lance (New Athens, Ill.) singled and Corr walked, Rahrich drove in Lance on a RBI single making it 6-1.
- The Bearcats scored a pair in the top of the sixth to make a 6-3 game.
- Stony Brook added one more run in the bottom of the sixth. After Corr, Rahrich and Rivera walked to load the bases, Chloe VanGorder (Harvey's Lake, Pa.) brought home Corr on a sac fly making it a 7-3 final.
NOTES
- Rahrich is now 17-11 in the circle for the season.
- Rivera's four RBIs in the game ties a career high.
