Command Performance! Women's Hoops Extends Streak to 14 with Win over Hartford

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — No come-from-behind drama required this time.

The Stony Brook women's basketball team established early command and defeated Hartford, 66-55, on Wednesday at Island Federal Arena.

The Seawolves (16-1, 5-0 America East) extended their winning streak to 14 games, the longest in the program's Division I era and now tied for the second-longest active streak in the NCAA.

UCLA is undefeated at 16-0, while Gonzaga's winning streak and overall record are identical to the Seawolves' marks.

After a drama-filled overtime win at New Hampshire on Saturday — which marked the fourth straight game to open conference play in which Stony Brook trailed at halftime — the matchup against the winless Hawks proved relatively comfortable.

The Seawolves opened their first double-digit lead, 15-5, on Kaela Hilaire's driving layup with 1 minute, 39 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Hartford closed back within three points during the opening minutes of the second quarter, but Stony Brook answered with an 8-0 run to restore a double-digit advantage.

The lead eventually swelled to 20 points on Hailey Zeise's three-pointer in the third quarter.

Four different Seawolves reached double-figures in scoring: India Pagan (14 points), Hilaire (13), Anastasia Warren (11) and Zeise (11). Cheyenne Clark contributed 11 rebounds in only 14 minutes.

Hartford had knocked Stony Brook out of the America East Tournament last season.

"It left a bad taste in our mouths when they knocked us out of the tournament," Zeise said. "Not trying to look in the past, but it's really important because that one meant a lot to me personally, and I know the returnees."

Stony Brook continues play on Saturday at Albany.

As for Wednesday's win, coach Caroline McCombs said: "We had a pretty good first half. I thought we were able to rebound it and push the ball in transition for easy baskets. That's something we've been talking about."
