Coach Mac Retires: 'Every player ... who played for him has complete praise for who he is as a person'

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — For each of the last 52 summers, Bobby McIntyre has been on a football field somewhere for training camp.

However, McIntyre went through his 52nd and final training camp in 2019.

McIntyre has opted to retire as the Stony Brook football program's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Rob Noel was promoted this week to assume the defensive coordinator duties with the Seawolves.

"It is very mixed emotions," McIntrye said about his retirement. "I guess it is good to be retired, and I still feel kind of young and able to do the job. But I thought it was time for me. In 42 years of coaching  —  I started in 1978 —I never missed a training camp. This past summer was my 52nd straight camp as a player or coach."

The 2019 season was McIntyre's ninth at Stony Brook and the third as the defensive coordinator. He spent his first six seasons coaching the linebacking corps.

He coached some of the best to ever suit up for Stony Brook.

McIntyre had the luxury to guide linebackers Jawara Dudley, Shayne Lawless and Noah McGinty to name a few.

Dudley earned first-team All-Big South Conference honors in 2012 after he recorded 81 total tackles. He was named second-team All-CAA Football as a senior in 2013. He departed ranked third in school history with 265 total tackles.

Lawless and McGinty both played for McIntyre from 2014 to 2018. Each collected 288 career tackles, fourth-most in school history.

Lawless also earned first-team All-CAA Football honors for his final season and received a spot on the FCS ADA Academic All-Star team. He was also a two-time second-team All-CAA Football performer. McGinty led Stony Brook with 94 total tackles in 2018 en route to third-team All-CAA Football.

"I always enjoyed our players here," McIntyre said. "We always recruited kids that were different than a lot of places. They were really tough kids and football-minded kids. Not big partiers. I always enjoyed those guys and that whole interaction."

McIntyre took those players and helped guide Stony Brook's defense to top-five finishes in total defense three times nationally, including No. 3 in 2014, No. 1 in 2015, and third again in 2016.

As Stony Brook will miss McIntyre, he will miss Stony Brook.

"I had an impact on a lot of young guys — hearing from so many of them now via emails and text messages," McIntyre said. "I will miss that daily interaction and going through the process with them and watching a kid who you recruited all the way through graduation and how they changed. I hopefully impacted their lives in a positive way. I think I always had a positive attitude with everybody, and impacted guys pretty well in that regard. I will miss the opportunity to do that. That's the biggest thing."

In nine years and all that success at Stony Brook, McIntyre not only had an effect on the players he coached, but also his fellow coaches, including head coach Chuck Priore

"It is with great regret to have Bob retire," Priore said. "I'm excited for him to get to the next stage of his life. As I near that age it becomes interesting to see peers retire. The one thing I will say about Coach Mac is that there isn't a person who has been associated with Stony Brook football who has anything negative to say about that man. Every player who I meet who played for him has complete praise for who he is as a person and how he handles situations and how we conducts business in a first-class way.

"I know he will conduct the rest of his life in a first-class way."

And does retirement look like for McIntyre?

"I'm going to do a lot of golfing, kayaking and fishing. We will see how that goes. I might buy a motorcycle too," he said with a smile.
