BANGOR, Maine — The Stony Brook men's basketball team opened America East play with a resounding victory.
The Seawolves continued their recent mastery of Maine, defeating the host Black Bears, 73-52, on Sunday.
Stony Brook has now won 19 consecutive meetings with Maine.
That establishes a program record for the longest string of victories against one opponent, exceeding an 18-game winning streak against UMBC produced from 2009 through 2017.
It also marks the longest active winning streak by an America East program against a fellow league member, narrowly exceeding Vermont's 17-game winning streak versus the Black Bears.
The Seawolves, who never trailed during the game, rattled off eight unanswered points early in the first half to open a 13-4 lead. The lead expanded to double-digits on
Makale Foreman's baseline jumpshot with 10 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in the half and Stony Brook did not look back.
Foreman finished with a game-high 22 points.
Miles Latimer followed with 14 points. Reigning America East Player of the Week
Elijah Olaniyi and
Jeff Otchere had 11 points apiece.
Olaniyi moved within 76 points of the 1,000-point plateau for his career.
The Seawolves (10-6, 1-0 AE) produced 15 steals, most by the team since tallying 18 against Hartford on Jan. 6, 2018.
Maine, the lowest scoring team in America East, went scoreless for a 5:09 span at one point in the first half.
Stony Brook continues its New England action on Wednesday when it tips off at defending America East champion Vermont at 7 p.m.
