STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's basketball team found its groove with America East play set to begin.
The Seawolves defeated NAIA-member Point Park, 83-39, on Tuesday afternoon at Island Federal Arena in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
All 14 Seawolves appeared in the game, with 13 producing points.
It marked Stony Brook's largest margin of victory since defeating Farmingdale by 47 points (91-44) in the third game of last season.
"I feel like today's game gave us the sense of what our identity is and what we need to get done," said
Jaden Sayles, who has scored in double-figures in all six games since joining the Seawolves from Akron. "It gave us momentum going into conference play."
Stony Brook rattled off the game's opening seven points, held Point Park scoreless the opening 5 minutes, 23 seconds and built a 23-point lead by halftime.
Omar Habwe received his first Stony Brook start in the victory.
Habwe and
Juan Felix Rodriguez contributed a team-high 12 points apiece.
Tykei Greene had 10 rebounds.
Jordan McKenzie appeared in his 100th career game.
"I was encouraged we were able to control the game," coach
Geno Ford said. "I thought we were good early in the first half and got a substantial lead and never felt like they were able to sustain a run. That was good and that was real progress for us."
Ford liked the Seawolves' progress with handling the press as well as their free-throw shooting, at least until the final minutes.
Point Park (0-5) played its fourth straight game against an NCAA Division I opponent.
"We put a huge emphasis on defense and being on the attack at all times," Habwe said.
Stony Brook (2-4) opens America East play with consecutive games this upcoming weekend at Binghamton.
"I think today was good because we got a little confidence and feel good about ourselves," Ford said. "We played a hard [nonconference] schedule, with good teams, on the road. … The conference is going to be interesting. I still think we have some good, quality players."
