STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook women's basketball team's defense of its 2019-20 America East title began on a high note.
After finding itself trailing by a point at halftime, the Seawolves raced to a 61-52 victory against Binghamton on Saturday afternoon at Island Federal Arena.
"I thought we played well in spurts today," said head coach
Caroline McCombs. "We are still working to put a full game together and that will come as we continue playing games. We always talk about taking care of ourselves and playing Stony Brook basketball and that is what we will continue to focus on."
Stony Brook (3-2, 1-0 AE) opened the third quarter with a three-point play from
Gigi Gonzalez and jumper from
India Pagan to grab the lead for good. The Seawolves held Binghamton without a field goal for the opening 4 minutes, 25 seconds of that period.
Earlette Scott's three-pointer with two seconds remaining in the third provided Stony Brook with a 47-36 lead heading into the final period.
Scott led the Seawolves with 15 points, followed by Pagan with 12 and
Anastasia Warren with 10.
Western Michigan transfer
Leighah-Amori Wool made her Stony Brook debut off the bench in the victory, while
Asiah Dingle returned after a one-game absence.
Wool logged 20 minutes and contributed five points, eight rebounds an assist and three steals.
Stony Brook committed only three turnovers after intermission after producing 17 before the break.
The Seawolves again host Binghamton (0-3, 0-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Island Federal Arena. America East is playing back-to-back conference games against the same opponent at the same venue this season in order to limit travel amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
