STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's basketball team remains perfect in America East play.
The Seawolves defeated UMass Lowell, 73-58, on Sunday afternoon at Island Federal Arena behind double-digit scoring performances from
Frankie Policelli,
Juan Felix Rodriguez and
Omar Habwe.
Policelli's marksmanship from three-point range set the tone early. He converted four first-half three-pointers, including a pair 36 seconds apart, that opened a 24-10 lead.
"We were moving the ball and finding Frankie," Rodriguez said. "He had a hot first half, so we kept finding him."
Said Policelli: "They were able to find me in open spots and I was able to knock them down. That's just how our team is."
Stony Brook never trailed in the game.
The Seawolves used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to open a 59-40 lead. Stony Brook led by as many as 21 points late.
Policelli finished with a team-high 16 points. Rodriguez contributed 13 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Habwe had 11 points.
Jaden Sayles had nine points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal in 21 minutes.
Asked about his range, Policelli said: "I feel like most of the time I don't even know where I am. … I can probably shoot close to half-court normal."
The Seawolves (5-4, 3-0 AE) had swept Binghamton during the opening week of conference play, while the River Hawks (2-5, 1-2) had split their opening series with preseason favorite Vermont.
Coach Geno Ford suggested UMass Lowell had the two best wins of any America East team this season — against San Francisco, then in the conference opener against the Catamounts.
"We really shot the ball lights out in the first half and that got us some separation," Ford said.
The teams meet again on Monday at 1 p.m. at Island Federal Arena.
"UMass Lowell is a good team," Policelli said. "And the team coming in (Monday) will be way different — hungrier and more physical."
