RIVERDALE, N.Y. — The Stony Brook women's basketball team flexed its muscles against the MAAC preseason favorite on Tuesday.
The Seawolves rattled off a dozen straight points late in the first quarter and led the rest of the way en route to a 65-52 win against Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium.
Stony Brook, coming off a record-setting 28-3 season in 2019-20, notched its first victory of the current campaign.
The Seawolves have won the past five meetings against Manhattan — with a win in each of the past five seasons.
"It was a total team effort tonight and we competed on both ends of the court against one of the top teams in the MAAC," head coach
Caroline McCombs said. "We really focused on getting off to a good start and I believe we did that."
During Stony Brook's 12-0 run, the Seawolves held Manhattan scoreless for 4 minutes, 21 seconds to grab a 20-10 first-quarter lead.
Stony Brook — and particularly
India Pagan — came out flying. The Seawolves shot 8-for-13 and outrebounded the Jaspers 10-5 in the opening period.
Pagan, held scoreless in a loss to No. 23 Syracuse nine days earlier, finished with 12 points.
Anastasia Warren had a team-high 14 points.
About the only blemish during the first-quarter spurt? The victim of a hard foul while driving,
Gigi Gonzalez was forced to limp off the court with 2:36 remaining in the period.
Earlette Scott entered and converted both free throws in Gonzalez's place.
Gonzalez reentered midway through the third quarter, when
Asiah Dingle picked up her fourth foul.
Manhattan did claw within three points during the second quarter, but Warren's three-pointer late in the period reopened a 10-point advantage. The Seawolves ultimately took a 35-23 lead into intermission and used a 15-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to build an 18-point advantage.
Nairimar Vargas-Reyes earned the first start of her Stony Brook career.
Aminata Zie and Kelis Corley made their collegiate debuts, while Leah Burden made her season debut. Zie also tallied her first point.
The Seawolves led by as many as 20 points.
Manhattan (0-1) was playing its season opener and lone tune-up for its MAAC opener on Friday at Rider.
The Seawolves (1-2) return to action Monday against Hofstra at 4 p.m. at Island Federal Arena.
