MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — The Stony Brook softball season began with some fireworks.
The Seawolves produced six unanswered runs and claimed a 6-5 walk-off win against Colgate on Friday afternoon in the Sunshine State.
"This was an exciting win to start our season," coach Megan Bryant said. "Once we were able to create some momentum and make things happen, the tide turned in this game. The little game was big for us today."
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, two-time America East Player of the Year
Melissa Rahrich delivered a game-tying two-run single.
Taylor Juenke followed with a two-out, walk-off walk later in the frame.
Junior college transfer
Dawn Bodrug made her Stony Brook debut in relief and earned the win after striking out seven over three scoreless innings.
"It felt amazing to get the first win of the season," Bodrug said. "My goal as a pitcher was to go in there and shut it down so the offense could go to work. It was such a great feeling to get the win in my first game at Stony Brook and at the Division 1 level."
Freshman
Shauna Nuss made her collegiate debut as the starter in right field and went 3-for-3.
The Seawolves began their rally from a 5-0 deficit with a three-run fifth highlighted by a two-run double by
Jourdin Hering, then an RBI double from
Nicole McCarvill.
Rahrich had received the Opening Day starting assignment and surrendered five runs in four-plus innings.
The Seawolves remain in Florida for four more games this weekend. Stony Brook next faces Columbia on Saturday at 11 a.m.
