BANGOR, Maine — An historic streak came to an end on Sunday.
One game after clinching the program's first-ever America East regular-season title, the Stony Brook women's basketball team had a furious comeback bid fall just short.
The Seawolves overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime. However, Maine snapped the Seawolves' NCAA-best and program-record winning streak at 22 games with a 64-62 victory at Cross Insurance Center.
"Throughout the course of the game there were a lot of possessions I think that we gave away," head coach
Caroline McCombs said. "Some forced or unforced turnovers that I wish we could get back. Credit to Maine, they did a good job of hunting threes today. They were knocking them down when they needed them."
Cheyenne Clark had hit a layup with 48 seconds remaining in regulation to pull Stony Brook within two points. She then twice hit one of two free throws, with an offensive rebound of her own miss in between, to force the extra session.
Stony Brook (25-2, 13-1 AE) had clinched first place with a 72-68 victory against Vermont on Wednesday.
That had marked the third straight games for the Seawolves that was decided in the final minute.
Now, it's four straight games all down to the wire … and unfortunately one defeat.
South Carolina inherits the nation's longest winning streak at 20 games.
The Seawolves have two games remaining in the regular season — Wednesday at Hartford and Saturday against UAlbany — before opening the America East tourney as the top seed with a quarterfinal matchup at Island Federal Arena on March 4.
