JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Stony Brook softball coach Megan Bryant entered the season believing her pitching staff was one of the best she's had in years.
Through six games, it has met that expectation.
The Seawolves beat Akron, 4-1, on Day 1 of the UNF/JU Spring Challenge on Friday and join Oregon as the nation's lone unbeaten teams.
"We were able to put together good pitching, solid defense and productive at-bats to start the weekend on a winning note," Bryant said.
Shelbi Denman tossed a complete game, her second of the season. The sophomore allowed one run on five hits to improve to 3-0.
Stony Brook (6-0) opened the scoring when freshman
Corinne Badger drove in two runs on a bases-loaded single in the third. It was Badger's first career hit.
After
Taylor Juenke walked and stole a base in the top of the fourth,
Jourdin Hering added an insurance run with an RBI single. Hering, who is approaching the program career singles record, produced two additional hits during the game to raise her season average to .583.
Nicole McCarvill added a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
The Seawolves are back in action Saturday for another matchup with the Zips at 1 p.m. They then take on co-host North Florida at 3:30 p.m.
